For almost three weeks, thousands of athletes from 204 nations ran, swam, jumped, and fought their way to gold. When the 2012 Summer Olympics ended on Sunday, the United States had taken home 104 medals, China had won 88, and the Olympics' host, Great Britain, had garnered 65.

Some countries, however, managed to win several medals despite having a very small population. Other states were very successful given their poverty. The charts below illustrate some different ways of looking at which countries were most successful:

Top medal winners

*Countries are ranked here by a metric called the "weighted medal count", in which gold medals count for 3 points, silver for 2, and bronze for 1. Thus France, though it won fewer medals than Japan, ranks higher because it won more golds.
